Field Trip Tuesdays and Park Day Thursdays are some of our most exciting homeschool days every week. We get to see all of our awesome friends, and we get to learn some pretty cool and interesting things with them. My kids have been LOVING learning since we started this homeschool journey and met all of our homeschool friends. Sometimes I can’t keep up with all the great stuff they want to learn! We went on a tour at The Shipley Nature Center in Huntington Beach, it was a hit. We had a lovely tour guide, Pam, and she was so great with the kids, very patient and answered there many, many, MANY questions. And they responded so well to her. There was a whole lot of learning going on! I love to watch these kids soak up information like little sponges.
Redwood seeds. Did you know redwood trees are poisonous to what would be their parasites? I had no idea! These are some redwood seeds. There were so very tall, but very young redwoods growing in the center.
Even Jordi wanted to do some learning
Monarch caterpillars! We missed the chrysalis’, bummer! But we will be growing some of our own next month.
A brown widow that has made itself a nice little home under the nature center sign. Curren discovered this little gem when she was going to take a picture. Glad I didn’t find it!
This little squirrel stole our bag of cookies while we were eating lunch! He shared it with a friend.
Who knew there could be such nature fun right in the middle of busy, crowded Huntington Beach?? It’s been requested by my little science lover, Curren, that we return. So I’m sure more pictures will come from there in the near future.

One of my favorite things about moving to the beach right before summer? It’s like having a vacation all summer long! The season tricked me, making me believe it was passing slowly and leisurely, but now here we are at the end of August, a new school year upon us, the sun is setting earlier every day, and I’m actually wearing sweatshirts at night! Signs that the seasons are changing. It’s been a blast of a summer, hanging out with our new homeschool friends, having sleepovers with grandma, kayaking and the beach, the movies, staying up late, reading lots of books in the shade. I couldn’t have asked for a better summer! I also tend to be lazier about photo taking in the summer, lots of these memories being locked up inside this memory of mine. Here’s some I did remember to take this month!
We went to a sand castle building contest in Long Beach, it was so cool! This was Curren’s favorite, the T-Rex. I didn’t catch many pictures that day while I chased Jordison around the crowded beach. I had this visual of her being just out of reach and destroying someone’s awesome sand castle. She didn’t do it…but I have no doubt she would have!
I just really love when Jordi sleeps. I mean I love when she’s awake, too! But when she’s like this, it’s such a sweet reminder that this little munchkin is still my baby girl!

Something else I love about our homeschool group (check out Life in Photos- July 2014, Part 1 if you haven’t seen it!) is our weekly park days. Never have I stayed so long at a park until I joined this group. We enjoy a nice, 7 hour day at most park days. Yes, 7 hours at the park! I was amazed at what kids find to do with themselves when they are left with so much time to just play! It’s become one of our favorite days of the week. This super fun park day consisted of a few hours of box house building. 3 words- SO MUCH FUN!

Not too long ago, I mentioned that we had joined this really awesome homeschooling group when we moved out to Huntington Beach. And it’s been just that since we’ve joined them. Awesome. We had a great time creating a new tradition, an annual 4th of July Bike Parade at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa! These kids were SO CUTE with their decked out bikes, streamers, glasses, hats, flutes, they looked like some proud citizens of the USA!
